News from the Alumni Director

Alumni Director
Dear Alumni and friends,
Summer is over and our Fall activities have begun. Below are a few comments on
activities that have taken place since the first of the year and those to
come.
2005 Phone-a-thon: We have received approximately $25,000 to date. Our
goal, same as last year, is $36,000. If you would like to make a contribution
or increase your gift, please do so before December 31, 2005. As in the past,
75% will go to the Endowment Fund and 25% will support the Alumni Office. Want
to use your credit card? Go to
www.stcbluehawks.com click on the ‘contribution’ file at the top of
the page and follow the prompts to make your donation. These gifts continue to
be part of our ‘Connection’ to the Hastings Catholic Schools. The monies that
go into the Endowment touch each of our student’s lives everyday!
STC Alumni Basketball & Volleyball Tournament: As in the years past,
the tournament was well attended. Everyone enjoyed the games, friendship and
the pizza party at the Knights of Columbus on Saturday evening. Mark your
calendars for next year’s tournament to be held on March 24 & 25, 2006.
STC Reunion and Golf Tournament: The reunion and tournament held in
June was another pleasurable event. Our numbers increased by four teams for
the Golf Tournament with a total of 14 teams. The teams played well, the food
was excellent and the prizes were terrific. The reunion was well attended
also. Look for the reunion pictures in this newsletter. The 2006 Alumni Golf
Tournament and Reunion will be June 23 & 24, 2006. All alumni, teachers and
those who have attended STC are invited along with the honor year classes
ending in 1 and 6 to attend these festivities. The Alumni Board members do the
scheduling, planning, and decorating that makes these events possible. The
Reunion and Golf Tournament re- ‘connect’ relationships from year’s past. This
is common ground and all have something to share with each other, whether we
are young or not so young. Maybe you will rekindle a relationship, be offered
a new job, or some worthy advice for a project you’ve been working on. Maybe
you would like to resolve some hard feelings you’ve had with someone! Who
knows, maybe you’ll win the lottery while here in Hastings! We have many
people who travel far distances for this special weekend. I would like to see
more of our Hastings area alumni attend and welcome back the out of town
alumni. We are here for you, please join us! Golf and reunion committees thank
you for your many donated hours of assistance in these events. We wouldn’t
have these activities available if it wasn’t for your continued support.
Cookbook: Cookbooks are for sale all
year! Are you in need of a wedding, birthday or Christmas gift? This cookbook
with 899 recipes is perfect for your gift giving needs. Call or email the
alumni office for more information.
Poinsettia sales: Sales will begin
October 19, 2005. They will sell for $15 in colors of red, pink or white.
Delivery fee will be $2.50 per address. Hastings residents can pick theirs up
at St. Michael’s School gym on Saturday, November 26th, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Are Your Meals
On Wheels?
School is in full swing, open houses, 5th graders moving to 6th
grade and all the excitement of a new school year is starting to
spin.
Are
you all rolling in different directions? Is there any time for
family? Think about it! If there is, great. If not, take the time to
have at least one family meal a day together. This is time well
spent. Lasting memories and information come from family time
together. Family members learn from each other. We all eat, don’t
we? Why not together? Make this your daily ‘round’ table personal
family meeting! Make it fun, and let everyone have a chance to share
their happenings of the day. Give it a whirl! |

| Each August, a group of Senior high
school athletes throughout the state of Nebraska come together to
play a football game at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. The game is
called the Shrine Bowl. The entire event is a fundraiser for the
Shriners Hospitals for Children. All of the players will spend one
day to meet and visit with young patients with physical disabilities
in Chicago. For the students selected, this opportunity is
essentially a reward for their past hard work and dedication in the
sport of football. The opportunity to meet and share this experience
with other student athletes throughout the state is a privilege
relished by all high school players. Playing in the same stadium
where the Huskers play, under much the same conditions, is indeed a
bonus. Sometimes lost in the shuffle are the coaches that attempt to
blend this thundering herd into some semblance of a team in the
10-day experience. However, for the coaches too, it’s an honor and
privilege, relished by high school coaches throughout the state.
Coaches are not only chosen because of their consistent winning
teams but are men of character and integrity, bringing out the very
best in each student player under their realm. The two head coaches
selected this year were certainly no exception. The two coaches
selected this year were Carl Tesmer (South team) and Ron Mimick
(North team). Both men coach at Catholic schools. Mr. Tesmer coaches
the St. Cecilia Blue Hawks in Hastings, while Mr. Mimick is head
coach at David City Aquinas. Each coach has more than 25 years
experience in high school athletics. Having men of this caliber
teaching and leading our student athletes exemplifies the very best
that a Catholic school education can bring to an individual. For
Hastings St. Cecilia athletes, it’s an extra benefit because both
men have served our student population at one time or another. Carl
Tesmer has been head coach at STC for the past 14 years and Ron
Mimick served in that same capacity from 1985 – 1989. |
